Tour Type: Guided Jungle Expedition with Lodge Stay
Tambopata jungle tours: canoe on the Tambopata River at sunset with rainforest silhouettes

Overview – Tambopata jungle tours (also known as Tambopata rainforest tours / Tambopata Amazon tours)

Tambopata jungle tours focus on authentic wildlife experiences across three days: Day 1 features a Tambopata River sunset wildlife cruise followed by a night boat search for white caimans (and, with luck, capybaras). Day 2 combines a rainforest hike with a canoe exploration on Lake Sandoval inside Tambopata National Reserve and a guided night walk. Day 3 begins with a spectacular dawn parrot clay lick before returning to Puerto Maldonado. Small groups, bilingual naturalist guides, and a comfortable riverside ecolodge are included.

Itinerary – Tambopata jungle tours (Tambopata National Reserve tours)

Day 1 – Arrival & Tambopata River Sunset Wildlife Cruise

Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, your guide welcomes you and coordinates a short, scenic 30-minute road transfer that follows the Tambopata River toward the lodge, passing jungle vegetation and small riverside settlements.

After a welcome drink, check-in and lunch, enjoy free time to relax before the first guided excursion:

Tambopata River Sunset Tour – Board a motorized canoe to navigate along the Tambopata River as the forest softens into golden light. Scan the shores for herons, kingfishers, flycatchers and other river birds, while macaws sometimes cross the sky in pairs.

Night Wildlife Search from the Boat – As darkness falls, use flashlights to locate white caimans resting in shallow waters; with a bit of luck you may also spot capybaras quietly grazing at the river’s edge. This peaceful night navigation offers a unique perspective of the Amazon after dark.

Return to the lodge for dinner. Overnight at the lodge.

Day 2 – Tambopata National Reserve: Lake Sandoval & Night Walk

Wake early and travel to the entrance of the Tambopata National Reserve. A 3 km rainforest trail leads through palm swamps and tall forest, with chances to find red howler monkeys, brown capuchins and colorful woodpeckers.

Board a paddle canoe to explore Lake Sandoval—a calm, dark-water oxbow lake that shelters endangered giant river otters. With patience you may watch them traveling in family groups, communicating with sharp whistles. Black caimans warm in the shallows and prehistoric-looking hoatzins perch on palm trunks.

Return to the lodge for lunch and rest.

Guided Night Walk – After dinner, venture into the forest with your guide to discover leaf-frogs, tarantulas, stick insects, bioluminescent beetles and the glow of distant caiman eyes along the riverbanks. Learn how nocturnal species survive and interact in this complex ecosystem. For more details, see our dedicated Tambopata Jungle Night Walk.

Overnight at the lodge.

Day 3 – Parrot Clay Lick & Departure

Before sunrise, navigate to a nearby parrot clay lick. Dozens of parrots and parakeets gather in the treetops, calling loudly before descending in bursts of color to eat mineral-rich clay—essential to help neutralize toxins present in wild fruits and seeds.

Return to the lodge for breakfast. Enjoy some free time for photos or a short self-guided walk, then check out.

Boat/road transfer back to Puerto Maldonado to connect with your flight or bus. You can also pair this itinerary with our Tambopata River Sunset Tour on a different day if your schedule allows.

End of services.
