Overview – 2-Day Lake Sandoval Tour (1 Night)

Lake Sandoval is one of the most iconic oxbow lakes inside the
Tambopata National Reserve,
known for its calm waters, rich birdlife, and the possibility of observing giant river otters in their natural habitat.

This 2-Day Lake Sandoval Tour allows you to experience the lake at its most active moments — early morning and late afternoon — while staying overnight near the shoreline, reducing travel time and maximizing wildlife encounters.

If you prefer a shorter visit without spending the night inside the reserve, we also operate a dedicated

Lake Sandoval Day Tour
.

This itinerary belongs to our curated

collection, which includes day trips and multi-day rainforest stays inside the reserve.

Itinerary – 2-Day Lake Sandoval Tour

Day 1 – Arrival, Jungle Walk & Sunset Canoe

Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, your guide will meet you and transfer you to the Madre de Dios River port. From here, we navigate by motorized boat for approximately 45 minutes before beginning a 3 km rainforest walk along the Sandoval Lake trail.

Along the trail, you may observe giant rainforest trees, monkeys, birds, reptiles, and colorful butterflies such as the blue morpho.

After reaching the lake, we continue by paddle canoe through flooded forest until arriving at the lodge. In the late afternoon, we explore the lake quietly, searching for wildlife along the shoreline.

At sunset, we focus on spotting black caimans and nocturnal species before returning to the lodge for dinner.

Day 2 – Sunrise Wildlife Observation & Return

Before sunrise, we paddle silently across Lake Sandoval toward the observation tower. This is the best moment to search for giant river otters, early-morning bird activity, and monkeys moving through the canopy.

Species commonly observed include hoatzins, herons, cormorants, anhingas, kingfishers, and macaws flying overhead.

After breakfast at the lodge, we return by canoe and trail to the river and continue back to Puerto Maldonado, ending your 2-day Lake Sandoval experience.
