Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick – Complete Guide
Overview — 4-Day Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick Tour
The 4-Day Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick Tour uses a lodge along the Tambopata tourist corridor as a comfortable base, letting you explore multiple ecosystems without changing accommodation every day.
Over four days you combine an early-morning visit to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, a full exploration of Lake Sandoval inside Tambopata National Reserve, a sunrise outing to Yacumama Lake, and a Tambopata River sunset experience—plus a guided rainforest night walk.
All excursions are led by bilingual naturalist guides. Small groups keep observation points quiet, improve photography opportunities, and allow flexible timing when conditions are favorable.
Times may adjust with season, weather, river levels, and protected-area logistics.

Itinerary — 4-Day Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick Tour (4 Days)
Day 1 • Arrival, Lodge Check-in & Tambopata River Sunset
Reception at the airport/bus station in Puerto Maldonado. Transfer to the lodge along the Tambopata corridor, check-in and welcome refreshment.
In the afternoon, board a motorized canoe for a Tambopata River sunset outing with chances to see riverside birds and wildlife.
After dusk, use spotlights to search for caimans. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 2 • Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick at Sunrise & Rainforest Night Walk
Very early (~03:00), depart toward the Filadelfia sector. Navigate upstream to arrive before the peak morning activity.
Parakeets and parrots often precede larger macaws—scarlet, blue-and-yellow, red-and-green—descending to feed on mineral-rich clay.
Field breakfast (logistics dependent). Return late morning/midday. Rest at the lodge.
After dark, night walk to look for frogs, insects, spiders (including tarantulas near burrows), and nocturnal birds.
Day 3 • Lake Sandoval (Tambopata National Reserve) & Optional Canopy/Zipline
Early departure to Lake Sandoval: boat + forest hike to the lake entrance. Quiet canoeing along palm-lined shores to look for hoatzins, herons, anhingas, cormorants, kingfishers, caimans and, with luck, giant river otters.
After lunch/rest, canopy walkways/zipline may be offered if operationally available in the lodge zone (harnesses & safety gear). Dinner and overnight.
Day 4 • Yacumama Lake Sunrise, Breakfast & Departure
Pre-dawn outing to Yacumama Lake for calm sunrise canoeing. Optional catch-and-release piranha fishing.
Breakfast back at the lodge, check-out and transfer to the airport/bus station. End of services.
The order of activities may change due to weather or logistics. The program content will be fulfilled.
