4-Day Tambopata Amazon Tour with lodge stay and wildlife activities
Four days in the rainforest with a lodge stay and guided wildlife observation.

Overview — 4-Day Tambopata Amazon Tour

The 4-Day Tambopata Amazon Tour is built for travelers who want full rainforest timing across sunrise, daytime, sunset and night while staying in a comfortable jungle lodge. It’s structured around peak activity windows: a Tambopata River sunset cruise, calm mornings, a dawn visit to a parrot & parakeet clay lick, a full Lake Sandoval exploration and a Yacumama Lake sunrise outing with catch-and-release piranha fishing. You’ll also climb a canopy tower and suspended-bridge walkways for a treetop perspective. Small groups and local guides keep the pace focused on observation, photography and safety. Times may adjust with season, weather and river levels.

Highlights — 4-Day Tambopata Amazon Tour

  • River wildlife at sunset (turtles, herons, kingfishers; chance of capybaras)
  • Night boat search for caimans along riverbanks using flashlights
  • Lake Sandoval canoe exploration (hoatzins, black caimans; giant river otters when conditions allow)
  • Dawn parrot & parakeet clay lick with mineral-rich feeding behavior
  • Canopy tower & walkways connecting suspended bridges above the rainforest
  • Yacumama Lake sunrise canoeing with catch-and-release piranha fishing and palm-swamp exploration
  • Guided night walk for nocturnal insects, frogs and tarantulas

Itinerary — 4-Day Tambopata Amazon Tour

Day 1 — Arrival, Check-in & Sunset Cruise

Meet your guide at arrival and transfer to the lodge. After check-in and lunch, rest before the late-afternoon river activity. Tambopata River Sunset Cruise: Motorized canoe navigation as the rainforest turns golden. Scan shores for turtles, herons and kingfishers, with a chance of capybaras. Quiet pace for observation and photos. Night Caiman Search: After dark, use flashlights to locate eyeshine along the river edges. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 2 — Lake Sandoval & Night Walk — 4-Day Tambopata Amazon Tour

After breakfast, head to the Lake Sandoval sector. A forest trail leads to the canoe station for silent paddling on the oxbow lake. Lake Sandoval Canoeing: Silent navigation increases the chance to spot hoatzins, black caimans and, with luck, giant river otters. Birdlife is often active along calm edges. Return for lunch and rest. Guided Night Walk: Explore forest trails to observe nocturnal wildlife such as frogs, insects and tarantulas.

Day 3 — Dawn Parrot Clay Lick & Canopy Tower

Before sunrise, navigate to a nearby parrot & parakeet clay lick. Birds gather to feed on mineral-rich clay—an intense early-morning scene for observation and photography. Return for breakfast, activities at the lodge and lunch. Canopy Tower & Walkways: Boat ride and jungle walk to the top, then connect five suspended bridges above the treetops. Time for photos and observation from above the canopy. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 4 — Yacumama Lake Sunrise, Piranha Fishing & Departure

At sunrise, travel to Yacumama Lake for canoe exploration. Watch medium-size macaws such as the red-bellied macaw at first light, explore palm-swamp forest and enjoy catch-and-release piranha fishing for observation and photography. Return to the lodge for breakfast, check-out and transfer to the airport. End of services.

Where does the Tambopata Amazon tour start and end?

All Tambopata Amazon tours begin and end in Puerto Maldonado, Peru. We meet you at the airport or bus terminal upon arrival, and provide all transfers to and from the lodge. No extra transportation is required — everything is coordinated for you.

How do I get to Puerto Maldonado?

You can fly to Puerto Maldonado (PEM) from Lima or Cusco on daily flights with LATAM, Sky, or JetSMART Airlines. The flight from Cusco takes about 1 hour. We recommend morning arrivals on Day 1 and afternoon departures on your last day.

What kind of accommodation is included?

Our lodges are comfortable Amazon ecolodges with private bungalows, each equipped with mosquito nets, private bathrooms, and reliable electricity for charging cameras and phones. Depending on the category selected, hot showers and WiFi may also be available near the dining area.

How difficult are the activities?

Most walks are easy to moderate, covering flat rainforest trails of about 2–3 km (1–2 miles). Activities are adjusted to your fitness level, and guides set a relaxed pace suitable for families and first-time jungle visitors. Rubber boots are provided when needed.

Is the Tambopata Amazon tour safe?

Yes. All tours are led by certified bilingual guides and experienced boat captains. Life jackets are mandatory during river navigation, and guides carry first-aid kits and radio communication at all times. The itinerary is designed with safety and comfort as priorities.

What should I bring?

Lightweight long-sleeved clothing, insect repellent, sunscreen, a flashlight or headlamp, and a reusable water bottle are recommended. The lodge provides rain ponchos and rubber boots if necessary. For photography, bring binoculars and a zoom lens — the wildlife encounters are incredible.

Are Tambopata Amazon tours good for families?

Absolutely. The program is family-friendly and well-paced for children. Kids especially enjoy the piranha fishing, night boat caiman search, and Amazon farm visit. Private family departures can be arranged upon request.

What is the weather like?

Tropical and warm year-round, averaging 77–90°F (25–32°C). The dry season (May–October) offers lower humidity and more macaw activity at clay licks. The wet season (November–April) brings dramatic skies, lush vegetation, and excellent opportunities for amphibian and bird photography.

Are mosquitoes a problem?

Mosquitoes are present in the rainforest, especially at dusk. All bungalows have mosquito nets, and we recommend wearing long sleeves and using repellent with DEET or natural alternatives. The lodges are located in well-maintained forest areas, minimizing exposure.

Can I charge my devices at the lodge?

Yes. All lodges have electricity (220V) available at certain hours of the day for charging phones, cameras, and batteries. We recommend bringing a universal adapter if needed.

How are meals served during the tour?

Meals are prepared daily by local cooks and served buffet-style or à la carte depending on the lodge. The menu includes Peruvian and Amazonian dishes. Please inform us in advance of any dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, allergies).

What is the group size?

We keep our groups small — typically 2 to 6 travelers per guide. This ensures a better wildlife experience, personalized interpretation, and greater safety during excursions.

Do I need travel insurance?

We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance covering medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and flight delays. The Amazon environment is remote, and having insurance provides additional peace of mind.

What is the payment and cancellation policy?

A 50% deposit is required to confirm your booking (net of transfer fees). The remaining balance is paid upon arrival at the lodge. Date changes are free up to 15 days before arrival, depending on availability. Full cancellation and refund details are provided during booking confirmation.

Is this tour suitable for solo travelers?

Yes. Solo travelers are welcome to join small groups or request a private departure (subject to availability and single-room supplement). Contact us to confirm the best option for your travel dates.

What kind of wildlife will I see?

Depending on the season and luck, you may spot macaws, parrots, toucans, capybaras, caimans, giant river otters, sloths, monkeys, and countless bird species. Each excursion focuses on different habitats to maximize sightings throughout your Tambopata Amazon tour.

Can I combine this tour with Machu Picchu or Cusco?

Yes — it’s easy. Many travelers visit Cusco and Machu Picchu first, then fly directly to Puerto Maldonado to join our Tambopata Amazon tours. We can coordinate timing and provide local tips for smooth connections.

Who operates the tours?

All tours are operated directly by Tambopata Wild, a local company based in Puerto Maldonado. We manage logistics, boats, guides, and accommodations — ensuring fair local employment and authentic Amazon experiences.
