Itinerary – Inkaterra Canopy Walkways Experience

Your day begins with pick-up from your accommodation in Puerto Maldonado (available from Hotel Copoazú, Hotel Enai, Wasai Puerto Maldonado, La Fauna Hotel, Kapievi, and nearby hotels). You will be transferred to the river port to board a motorized boat. The 1-hour journey along the Madre de Dios River is an opportunity to spot birds such as herons, kingfishers, and oropendolas, and on some mornings you may also notice wildlife activity along the banks.

Upon arrival at the Inkaterra Reserve entrance, a short jungle trail leads you to the first canopy tower—rising high above the forest floor. From here, the adventure begins: walking across suspended bridges that connect platforms anchored to towering emergent trees. This network spans hundreds of meters and provides panoramic views of the rainforest canopy at peak morning activity.

As you cross each bridge, your guide will help you spot toucans, parrots, woodpeckers, monkeys (such as red howlers), and occasionally sloths hidden in the branches. The treetop walk offers a focused birdwatching experience, with chances of observing mixed-species flocks moving through the upper layers of the forest.

After completing the canopy circuit and reaching the final observation tower, you begin the descent and return by the same route. The boat awaits for your return ride to Puerto Maldonado, followed by a short vehicle transfer back to your hotel, generally arriving around 11:00 a.m.

Wildlife & Birdwatching – What You May See

  • Birds: Tanagers, toucans, honeycreepers, jacamars, flycatchers, parrots, woodpeckers, and mixed-species canopy flocks.
  • Mammals: Red howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, capuchins, and occasional sloth sightings.

Itineraries

Inkaterra Canopy Walkways Tour

Start: 6:00 a.m. — We begin with hotel pick-up from your accommodation in Puerto Maldonado. Pick-up points include Hotel Enai, Wasai Hotel, Hotel Copoazu, Hotel Tantiri, Kapievi, Tambopata Hostel, and other lodges or guesthouses located along the Tambopata tourism corridor. A brief drive through the town leads to our river dock on the Madre de Dios River.

From there, we board a motorized canoe for a scenic river journey. This tranquil ride offers ideal conditions to observe early morning wildlife along the banks and river margins. It is not uncommon to spot snowy egrets, great egrets, cocoi herons, roseate spoonbills, cormorants, or kingfishers diving for fish. Flocks of oropendolas and parrots may be seen crossing the sky, and with some luck, capybaras can be seen resting along the muddy shores. The atmosphere is filled with the sound of awakening jungle life and morning mist rising from the forest canopy.

Upon arrival at the entrance to the Inkaterra Ecological Reserve, we begin a short guided forest walk. This lush trail winds through lowland rainforest, where your naturalist guide will interpret the surrounding vegetation—such as walking palms, lianas, and heliconias—until we reach the base of the first canopy tower.

We ascend the secure tower gradually, climbing up to 43 meters (141 feet) above the forest floor. As we reach the platform, we step into a completely different ecosystem: the treetop world of the Amazon rainforest. Here, your guide will introduce you to a new layer of biodiversity. The early morning is ideal for observing mixed-species flocks of birds moving through the canopy—species such as the paradise tanager, flame-crested tanager, green-and-gold tanager, blue dacnis, green honeycreeper, and various euphonias are frequently seen. Woodpeckers, woodcreepers, puffbirds, and aracaris also inhabit this vertical forest level.

We continue the walk along the Inkaterra Canopy Walkways, a series of seven hanging suspension bridges suspended between tree platforms and observation decks. These bridges span over 300 meters in total and reach heights of up to 38 meters (124 feet). Walking above the treetops offers breathtaking views, an overwhelming sense of scale, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the rainforest from above. The silence, broken only by birdcalls and rustling leaves, enhances the immersion.

Throughout the walk, there are chances to observe red howler monkeys in the distance, sloths camouflaged among the branches, and insect species adapted to canopy life. Your guide will explain the importance of this upper layer of the forest in nutrient cycling, seed dispersal, and animal behavior.

From the second tower, we enjoy a panoramic 360-degree view over an endless green sea of foliage. This platform is a favorite among photographers and birders. Depending on seasonality and weather, birds of prey such as plumbeous kites or even harpy eagles have been observed from this vantage point.

After taking time to absorb the view and spot more fauna, we descend gradually and walk back through the rainforest trail. Along the way, butterflies, tree frogs, or even poison dart frogs can be encountered near small creeks or among the undergrowth.

We return to our canoe for the ride back to Puerto Maldonado, where you can enjoy final sightings of riverside wildlife and reflect on the experience.

Return: 11:00 a.m. — We provide drop-off at your lodge, hotel, or transfer point such as the airport or bus station.
