Lake Sandoval Lodge – 2-Day Amazon Experience in Tambopata
- Location: Lake Sandoval Lodge, Tambopata National Reserve – Puerto Maldonado, Peru.
- Type: Eco-lodge in the rainforest.
- Ideal For: Wildlife lovers, photographers, couples, families, and small groups.

Overview – Lake Sandoval Lodge (2 Days / 1 Night)
Lake Sandoval Lodge is set near one of the most beautiful oxbow lakes in the Peruvian Amazon, inside the buffer zone of Tambopata National Reserve.
Staying at this Lake Sandoval lodge means waking up to jungle sounds, exploring the lake by paddle canoe, and observing wildlife such as howler monkeys, hoatzins, macaws, and, with luck, giant river otters.
However, if you prefer to visit the lake without spending the night inside the reserve, we also operate a dedicated
Lake Sandoval Tour from Puerto Maldonado, which can be combined with this lodge stay before or after your overnight program.
Access & travel time
Access to the lodge combines a short boat trip along the Madre de Dios River with a jungle hike through flooded palm forest.
As a result, because you stay close to Lake Sandoval itself, you spend more time on the water and trails, and less time commuting from Puerto Maldonado.
Guided activities & lodge services
Guided activities are run by local naturalists who know the best spots for birds, primates, and nocturnal animals, while lodge staff provide a comfortable base with private cabins and full-board meals.
Additionally, during a longer stay in the area, many travelers choose to complement their time at Lake Sandoval with other signature itineraries in Tambopata, such as the
Tambopata Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick tour
on the upper Tambopata River or the
Lago Yacumama tour
for sunset, canoeing and wildlife viewing on a peaceful Amazonian lake.
- Stay near the shoreline of Lake Sandoval, one of Tambopata’s most iconic wildlife hotspots.
- Daily guided excursions by canoe and on foot to maximize wildlife sightings.
- Small groups, quiet paddling, and early-morning departures designed for nature observation.
- Full-board accommodation with Peruvian and Amazonian cuisine.
Is This the Right Lake Sandoval Tour from Puerto Maldonado?
This Lake Sandoval Lodge – 2-day program is the best option if you want more time on the lake than a quick day trip, but still prefer an efficient itinerary with only one night inside the rainforest.
Moreover, because the lodge is positioned near Lake Sandoval, the schedule prioritizes wildlife activity windows at sunrise and late afternoon, when paddling is quiet and sightings are often strongest.
If you are deciding between a day visit, a 2-day lodge stay, or a longer multi-day program, this guide explains all realistic formats and how access works from Puerto Maldonado:

Itinerary – Lake Sandoval Lodge (2 Days / 1 Night)
Day 1 – Arrival, Jungle Walk & Evening Canoe
Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, your guide will welcome you at the airport and transfer you to the Madre de Dios River, where we board a motorized canoe for about forty-five minutes downstream.
Then, we begin a three-kilometer (approximately one-hour) hike along the Sandoval Lake Trail through the rainforest.
Along the way, you may see giant trees, several species of birds and monkeys, small reptiles such as lizards, and colorful butterflies like the blue morpho fluttering along the trail.
After that, we continue by paddle canoe through the flooded forest until reaching Lake Sandoval.
While crossing the lake, we search for wildlife along its shores before arriving at the lodge to settle into our rooms.
In the afternoon, we take a guided walk in the primary forest in search of wildlife and to learn about the Brazil nut trees.
Around sunset, we board a paddle canoe again to explore the lake and look for black caimans and nocturnal animals.
Finally, we return to the lodge for dinner, and your guide will give you a briefing about the next morning’s activity.
Day 2 – Sunrise on Lake Sandoval & Return to Puerto Maldonado
At dawn, we leave before sunrise to paddle quietly along the lake’s edge toward the observation tower to watch the sunrise from the canopy.
During this time, we look for giant river otters fishing in the lake and scan for caimans basking in the first rays of sunlight.
In addition, the morning hours are perfect for birdwatching — herons, cocoi herons, agami herons, cormorants, anhingas, hoatzins (locally called shanshos), and several species of kingfishers are often seen.
We also search for monkeys such as capuchins, squirrel monkeys, and red howler monkeys in the treetops.
With good luck, we may see giant otters catching fish and swimming near the boat.
As the forest brightens, the sounds of birds and monkeys fill the air, creating a spectacular Amazon morning.
Afterwards, we return to the lodge for breakfast.
Then, we begin our journey back: paddling across Lake Sandoval, hiking the three-kilometer trail through the forest to reach the Madre de Dios River, and continuing by motorized canoe to the port.
A taxi will be waiting to transfer you to the airport in Puerto Maldonado, marking the end of your Lake Sandoval Lodge adventure.

Location & Access to Lake Sandoval Lodge from Puerto Maldonado
Lake Sandoval lies about 30–45 minutes by motorized boat from Puerto Maldonado along the Madre de Dios River, followed by a hike of approximately 3 km (about 1.5–2 hours walking time, depending on trail conditions).
Therefore, the Lake Sandoval lodge is positioned near the lake, allowing early departures on the water and quiet returns after sunset.
During the wet season, some sections of the trail may be muddy or partially flooded, so rubber boots are usually provided or can be rented.
Overall, the combination of river navigation and jungle walking already feels like a nature experience before you even reach the lodge.
Lake Sandoval Lodge – Wildlife & Experiences
Canoe Excursions and Birdwatching
One of the main advantages of staying in a Lake Sandoval lodge is the ability to explore the lake by paddle canoe during the most productive hours of the day.
In particular, early in the morning and late in the afternoon, birds and mammals are particularly active along the shoreline, offering excellent opportunities for photography and observation.
Typical sightings include hoatzins, cormorants, herons, egrets, kingfishers, and various species of macaws flying overhead.
As a result, the quiet paddling approach reduces disturbance and gives you more time to watch animals behave naturally.
Monkeys, Macaws & Giant Otters
The forests around Lake Sandoval are home to several primate species, such as red howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and brown capuchins.
On some excursions, it is possible to see troops moving through the canopy, feeding or resting near the lake edges.
Another highlight is the chance to observe giant river otters. Although sightings are not guaranteed, Lake Sandoval is known as one of the best places in Tambopata to look for these endangered mammals.
They often travel and hunt in family groups, patrolling the lake surface and occasionally vocalizing as they interact.
Meanwhile, travelers who are especially interested in macaws often combine this lodge stay with a visit to the upper Tambopata River on the
Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick tour,
where large numbers of scarlet, red-and-green and blue-and-yellow macaws gather at a riverside cliff.
Night Walks and Nocturnal Wildlife
After dinner, guided night walks near the Lake Sandoval lodge reveal a different side of the rainforest.
With flashlights, you may find tree frogs, insects, spiders such as tarantulas, and occasionally nocturnal mammals.
In addition, listening to the chorus of frogs and crickets is part of the experience and helps illustrate just how active the rainforest is after dark.
Many travelers choose to extend their stay in Puerto Maldonado with an additional
Tambopata Rainforest Night Walk Tour,
which complements the Lake Sandoval experience with more nocturnal wildlife along the Tambopata River.
