The 4-Day Tambopata Amazon Tour is structured around the most active wildlife hours of the Amazon rainforest, combining river navigation, oxbow lake exploration, canopy observation, guided forest walks, and sunrise lake activity. The program is designed to prioritize observation over speed, allowing travelers to experience the rainforest in a natural and unhurried way.

Itinerary — 4-Day Tambopata Amazon Tour
The itinerary is carefully structured to align with peak wildlife activity periods, combining sunrise excursions, sunset navigation, daytime forest exploration, canopy observation, and nocturnal activity for a complete Amazon rainforest experience.
Day 1 — Arrival, Lodge Check-in, Tambopata River Sunset and Caiman Search
Arrival in Puerto Maldonado, reception by your guide, and transfer to the lodge. After check-in and lunch, you will have time to rest before the afternoon activity.
In the late afternoon, begin the Tambopata River sunset cruise by motorized canoe. As the light softens, wildlife becomes more active. Along the riverbanks, it is common to observe turtles (taricayas), herons, kingfishers, and occasionally capybaras resting near the water.
After sunset, continue with a night caiman search. Using flashlights, guides locate caimans by detecting the reflection of their eyes along the river edges. This is one of the most characteristic nocturnal experiences in the Amazon.
Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2 — Lake Sandoval Exploration and Rainforest Night Walk
After breakfast, travel to the Lake Sandoval sector within the Tambopata National Reserve. The journey includes a forest trail of approximately 3 km through tropical vegetation until reaching the canoe station.
The Lake Sandoval canoe exploration is conducted in a quiet, paddle-powered canoe, allowing for minimal disturbance. This increases the probability of observing wildlife such as hoatzins, black caimans, monkeys, and a wide variety of bird species. With favorable conditions, giant river otters may also be seen moving and hunting in the lake.
Return to the lodge for lunch and rest.
In the evening, take part in a guided rainforest night walk. Equipped with flashlights, the group explores forest trails in search of nocturnal wildlife including frogs, insects, spiders, tarantulas, and other invertebrates. The experience also highlights the sounds and atmosphere of the forest at night.
Day 3 — Dawn Parrot Clay Lick and Canopy Tower Experience
Early departure before sunrise to visit a parrot and parakeet clay lick. At this time of day, flocks of parrots gather to feed on mineral-rich clay, an important behavior for their diet. The activity depends on weather conditions and natural wildlife activity.
After returning to the lodge for breakfast, you will have time to rest before continuing with the day’s activities.
Later, visit the canopy tower and suspended walkways. This activity includes a combination of river transport and a forest walk, followed by access to elevated platforms and bridges above the forest canopy. From this vantage point, it is possible to observe birdlife and understand the vertical structure of the rainforest ecosystem.
Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 4 — Yacumama Lake Sunrise, Piranha Fishing and Departure
Early morning departure to Yacumama Lake for a sunrise canoe experience. The lake is surrounded by palm-swamp forest (aguaje), creating a unique habitat for birdlife and aquatic species.
During this excursion, it is possible to observe hoatzins, herons, kingfishers, and red-bellied macaws associated with the palm ecosystem. The calm water conditions provide excellent opportunities for photography and quiet observation.
The experience also includes catch-and-release piranha fishing, conducted as a light and controlled activity within the natural setting.
Return to the lodge for breakfast, followed by check-out and transfer to Puerto Maldonado for your departure. End of services.

Where does the Tambopata Amazon tour start and end?
All Tambopata Amazon tours begin and end in Puerto Maldonado, Peru. We meet you at the airport or bus terminal upon arrival, and provide all transfers to and from the lodge. No extra transportation is required — everything is coordinated for you.
How do I get to Puerto Maldonado?
You can fly to Puerto Maldonado (PEM) from Lima or Cusco on daily flights with LATAM, Sky, or JetSMART Airlines. The flight from Cusco takes about 1 hour. We recommend morning arrivals on Day 1 and afternoon departures on your last day.
What kind of accommodation is included?
Our lodges are comfortable Amazon ecolodges with private bungalows, each equipped with mosquito nets, private bathrooms, and reliable electricity for charging cameras and phones. Depending on the category selected, hot showers and WiFi may also be available near the dining area.
How difficult are the activities?
Most walks are easy to moderate, covering flat rainforest trails of about 2–3 km (1–2 miles). Activities are adjusted to your fitness level, and guides set a relaxed pace suitable for families and first-time jungle visitors. Rubber boots are provided when needed.
Is the Tambopata Amazon tour safe?
Yes. All tours are led by certified bilingual guides and experienced boat captains. Life jackets are mandatory during river navigation, and guides carry first-aid kits and radio communication at all times. The itinerary is designed with safety and comfort as priorities.
What should I bring?
Lightweight long-sleeved clothing, insect repellent, sunscreen, a flashlight or headlamp, and a reusable water bottle are recommended. The lodge provides rain ponchos and rubber boots if necessary. For photography, bring binoculars and a zoom lens — the wildlife encounters are incredible.
Are Tambopata Amazon tours good for families?
Absolutely. The program is family-friendly and well-paced for children. Kids especially enjoy the piranha fishing, night boat caiman search, and Amazon farm visit. Private family departures can be arranged upon request.
What is the weather like?
Tropical and warm year-round, averaging 77–90°F (25–32°C). The dry season (May–October) offers lower humidity and more macaw activity at clay licks. The wet season (November–April) brings dramatic skies, lush vegetation, and excellent opportunities for amphibian and bird photography.
Are mosquitoes a problem?
Mosquitoes are present in the rainforest, especially at dusk. All bungalows have mosquito nets, and we recommend wearing long sleeves and using repellent with DEET or natural alternatives. The lodges are located in well-maintained forest areas, minimizing exposure.
Can I charge my devices at the lodge?
Yes. All lodges have electricity (220V) available at certain hours of the day for charging phones, cameras, and batteries. We recommend bringing a universal adapter if needed.
How are meals served during the tour?
Meals are prepared daily by local cooks and served buffet-style or à la carte depending on the lodge. The menu includes Peruvian and Amazonian dishes. Please inform us in advance of any dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, allergies).
What is the group size?
We keep our groups small — typically 2 to 6 travelers per guide. This ensures a better wildlife experience, personalized interpretation, and greater safety during excursions.
Do I need travel insurance?
We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance covering medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and flight delays. The Amazon environment is remote, and having insurance provides additional peace of mind.
What is the payment and cancellation policy?
A 50% deposit is required to confirm your booking (net of transfer fees). The remaining balance is paid upon arrival at the lodge. Date changes are free up to 15 days before arrival, depending on availability. Full cancellation and refund details are provided during booking confirmation.
